Despite the strong career prospects of people with digital marketing skills, very few colleges offer robust programs in this area. While there are numerous reasons for this, the main one is simply that keeping curriculum up to date with the trends and technological innovations within Digital Marketing is hard. Industry standards change on an almost annual basis, and altering curriculum to keep up with it can be a difficult task for any one college to manage.
Because of this, most colleges elect to offer traditional marketing curricula. While this is an excellent base for graduates, these curricula are normally excessively focused on theory, strategy, and the in-person retail experience, none of which are particularly important to companies looking for employees who can live on the cutting edge of new digital marketing strategies. Therefore, our major in Digital Marketing is intended to integrate with existing college marketing curricula and provide students with the most vital and in-demand skills in the area.
We consulted with multiple Fortune 500 companies and successful startups to identify the key areas in which existing marketing curricula failed to prepare students for the realities of marketing roles in the modern workforce. We identified the following as vital skills for entry level marketing coordinators and managers that said individuals typically lack upon completion of an undergraduate marketing program.
Our major in Digital Marketing focuses on these topics, in addition to viral growth techniques, influencer marketing, data mining, and lead generation. It is supplemented by courses in programming, which have been included to address a need for marketers to be able to scrape data and perform more complex marketing campaigns.
This major is not intended to function as a stand-alone major. Instead, its purpose is to supplement existing business and marketing curricula to allow schools to launch a Digital Marketing major.
