Rize recommends any laptop, with an updated operating system and functional webcam, more recent than 2014 for students taking Rize courses.

<aside> 💡 If in doubt, if the computer can run a Zoom call with camera on, while running 10+ browser tabs without experience any noticeable slow-down, then it will be sufficient for any Rize course.

This applies to all courses - save for actuarial sciences, discussed below. More technically advanced courses that involve topics that normally require more computational power follow modern best practices in using server-side compute via the web browser. Which is to say that students will use powerful computers over the internet, so they don’t need a powerful computer themselves.

e.g. Training Machine Learning models in DAM III & IV happens using the Binder service and is not performed locally on students' machines.

Note: the student should have sufficient privileges on their machine to install new software.

For Actuarial Sciences Courses

It is recommended that students purchase both the TI-30X IIS Multi-View and the TI BA II Plus calculators for Actuarial Sciences courses, as these courses follow the SoA calculator policy as closely as possible. That policy is listed below:

“Students may ONLY use the battery or solar-powered Texas Instruments BA-35 model calculator, the BA II Plus, the BA II Plus Professional, the TI-30Xa or TI-30X II (IIS solar or IIB battery), or TI-30X MultiView (XS Solar or XB Battery). Candidates may use more than one of the approved calculators during an examination.”
