This document outlines the technological requirements for students in Rize-powered programs. It is subdivided into basic requirements — which covers the requirements for all Rize-powered programs — requirements for proctored exam courses — which covers additional requirements for Pillars courses that include proctored exams — and advanced requirements — which covers the requirements for more technology-focused programs.

Regardless of subject, students are generally more successful with a laptop, rather than a desktop. Laptops allow them to more regularly check Q&A forums and message instructors, among other advantages. However, this is not a requirement.

To ensure that a student is able to complete their work successfully in any Rize-powered class, students must use a desktop, laptop, 2-in-one or other device that meets the following requirements:

If you have questions about the power of any computer built after 2014, please use the following test: the computer should be able to run a Zoom call with camera on, while running 10+ browser tabs without experiencing any noticeable slow-down.

Courses in the Rize Pillars catalog that include proctored exams use Honorlock for online proctoring. In addition to the basic requirements above, the following additional requirements apply:

More technically advanced courses that involve topics that require substantial amounts of compute follow modern best practices in using server-side compute via web browser. Which is to say that students will use powerful computers over the internet, so they don’t need a particularly powerful computer themselves.
