Healthcare Administration Overview

Why This Matters

The Healthcare sector accounts for nearly 20% of GDP and needs management knowledge just as desperately as it needs care providers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for Medical and Health Service Managers is $104,830. Furthermore, with the increasing age of the Baby Boomer generation, the number of jobs in this type of role is expected to increase by 28% over the next 10 years—much faster than the average growth rate of all occupations (3%).

Students who wish to pursue more senior roles in these areas may need to complete a Masters of Healthcare Leadership or an MBA in Health Administration after obtaining some work experience, however, most roles in this area, including Hospital Administrator, Health Services Manager, Nursing Home Manager and Health Administrator are accessible to students upon completion of a bachelor’s degree, or with two or fewer years of employment.

Simply put, jobs in Healthcare Administration offer students the best possible combination of high salary, high demand, and the opportunity to make positive impacts, making it an ideal career choice for any interested student.

About

Our Healthcare Administration and Management major was developed with the support of Dr. Robert Hansen of Dartmouth College (bio below) and strives to provide students with the skills they need to succeed within the modern healthcare workforce. Our curriculum was developed with three major priorities:

As with most of our programs, Healthcare Administration and Management prioritizes Project-Based Learning. Students will complete a strategy capstone that asks them to synthesize their knowledge and skills to plan a strategic transformation of a simulated healthcare system (a hospital network, for example). In addition, students will have a significant project in most of their classes intended to allow them to practice the skills covered by that class.

Additionally, with the rise of Big Data and Analytics across the healthcare ecosystem, it is increasingly important that Healthcare Administrators understand how to make use of the tremendous amount of information now at their fingertips. As such, this program not only features a class in Health Data and Analytics, but also incorporates concepts learned in that class to later classes in the sequence to reinforce key skills.

Lastly, the program includes a dedicated course in Healthcare Service Operations, which was consistently flagged as an area of high priority in our conversations with Healthcare Administration professionals due to the increasing complexity of healthcare systems.

Curriculum Committee

Curriculum Committee Updates

The curriculum committee feedback has focused on enhancing the data analytics aspect of healthcare administration decision-making. These recommendations include increasing emphasis on data safety best practices, diversifying the data analytics tools used, and investigating the implications of advances in AI to the healthcare field. Additionally, the committee recommended broadening the scope of career path discussions to expose students to the wide range of opportunities. These recommendations have been integrated into the development of Health Law and Ethics and Healthcare Finance courses.
